Badlands Off Road Park sits just outside Attica, Indiana, on the western edge of the state, a short drive from Lafayette and within easy reach of both Indianapolis and the Chicago area. What began as an old gravel and sand quarry along the Wabash River has grown into one of the Midwest’s most complete and consistently popular off-road destinations. The park now covers over 1,400 acres of multi-directional terrain that somehow packs an impressive amount of variety into a single property.

You can go from open sand dunes and coarse gravel hills that feel almost desert-like, into tight wooded trails, then drop into streams, mud holes, and rock gardens without ever leaving the park. There is a full-size motocross track for dirt bikes and ATVs, and a dedicated Rock Quarry / SUV area where Jeeps, trucks, and side-by-sides can work bigger obstacles and rock faces. The mix is what makes Badlands special — it doesn’t lock you into one style of riding. Stock vehicles and newer riders have plenty of friendly lines and practice areas, while more experienced drivers and riders can still find challenges that keep them busy all day.

The park has a strong family-oriented atmosphere. Alcohol is strictly prohibited, which helps keep the vibe more relaxed and welcoming than many other private parks. On-site amenities are solid for a day trip or a multi-day stay: a Pro Shop with gear, flags, and apparel, a Food Shack serving home-cooked meals, and private showers. Just down the road you’ll find Off The Trail Vacation Rentals & Campground, Adventure Rentals for Polaris UTVs and side-by-sides, and Attica Motorsports (the on-site Polaris dealership). It’s the kind of place where you can buy a machine in the morning and be riding it on the trails the same afternoon.

After the entrance sign, continue about a quarter mile to the registration area. The park is open year-round, rain or shine, with typical hours of 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Friday through Sunday hours are often extended to 7:00 PM during the main season (roughly April through early November). Closed Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Every visitor must sign a waiver and those 18+ need a valid photo ID. Orange safety flags are required on all four-wheel vehicles (available for purchase in the Pro Shop). Helmets are required for ATV and dirt bike riders, and for minors in side-by-sides. No sand rails or dune buggies. Annual memberships are available if you plan to visit regularly.

Difficulty & Vehicles The overall rating of Easy to Hard is accurate. Trails and play areas span the full spectrum. Dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs/side-by-sides, Jeeps, trucks, SUVs, and other 4x4s are all welcome. The Rock Quarry leans harder, while the dunes, main trail system, and designated beginner zones give stock and less-experienced drivers plenty of room to explore without getting in over their heads.

Tips for Visitors Bring recovery gear if you plan to push into the tougher lines or the quarry. Flags, basic parts, and riding gear are available on-site if you forget something. The park is mapped in the onX Offroad app with color-coded difficulty, which makes navigation much easier on a first visit. Conditions can change with weather — the sand and mud especially — so a quick check of the website or a phone call before you leave is always worthwhile.
