Prototype H3 Cargo Storage Deck with Optional Drawers – Overland Ready

The parts for the new H3 Overland Cargo Deck finally showed up today. I got so fired up I dropped the whole system into the back of the H3 with zero bolts, and it’s already sitting solid and working better than I expected. Bolts and the heavy-duty drawer slides land tomorrow, then it gets locked down for real.

This is a modular aluminum cargo platform and drawer system built specifically for the Hummer H3, but the design can easily be adapted to just about any vehicle — just reach out through the Contact Me page if you want something similar for yours.

Materials & Construction

Everything is 5052 aluminum — the same alloy I use on a lot of my other H3 parts for a reason. 5052 is an aluminum-magnesium alloy that hits a really good balance of strength, weight, and corrosion resistance. It holds up better than a lot of other common aluminum alloys when it’s exposed to road salt, moisture, and trail abuse. It’s highly formable, welds cleanly, and has solid fatigue resistance, which is why you see it used in marine applications, truck bodies, and structural sheet work where things actually get wet and beat up. It doesn’t need to be the hardest alloy on the planet — it just needs to stay strong and not turn to junk after a few seasons of real use.

Here’s the exact breakdown on this prototype:

  • Side supports: 3/16″ (0.188″) 5052 aluminum, laser-cut, deburred, bent, and powder-coated RAL 9005 black. These feature solid X-bracing so the structure stays rigid under load and vibration.
  • Tops / elevated base and work table: 1/8″ (0.125″) 5052 aluminum, laser-cut and bent. These are still bare right now. My buddy still needs to weld the corners to lock everything in tighter and make them even stronger. Once that welding work is done, they’ll get the same RAL 9005 powder coat.

I ordered these as a one-off prototype set (CARGO-SUPPORT-080526, CARGO-ELEVATED-BASE-080526, and CARGO-WORK-TABLE-080526) to prove the design, check fitment, and beat on it before thinking about any production run. The black powder-coated supports already look sharp against the H3 interior. The tops will match once the corners are welded and powder-coated.

How It Works

Right now the queen-size futon mattress with the bears, deer, and cabin pattern is sitting on the elevated deck. The second you park, your bed is already set. No tent poles, no ground cloth, no wrestling with fabric in the dark. Just open the back and climb in.

When you open the tailgate, you’ve got real options:

  • Run it as a solid elevated platform and slide gear underneath — a standard Milwaukee toolbox or recovery kit fits cleanly.
  • Use the work surface as a cooking or wrenching table that can slide out when you need it.
  • Or go full drawer system once the slides arrive tomorrow for organized, pull-out storage.

The deck height leaves usable space underneath while giving you a flat, solid surface up top for the mattress or gear. Everything is built around the actual cargo dimensions, wheel-well spacing, and tailgate height of the H3 so it sits right and functions the way it should. If you drive something else and want a version that fits your vehicle, the same modular approach can be adapted — just use the Contact Me page, and we’ll talk.

Real-World Test This Weekend

This Friday and Saturday, the H3 is headed to Badlands Off-Road Park in Attica, Indiana. Once the bolts and drawer slides show up tomorrow, I’ll finish the install, load it up, and put actual trail miles and overnight camping on the system. That’s the only way to find out if a prototype is worth a damn.

The H3 Overland Cargo Deck is still early, but so far it’s doing exactly what I wanted — a modular aluminum cargo platform that turns the back of the Hummer into a functional sleeping and working space the second you park. And again, if you’re looking for something similar for a different vehicle, the design is flexible enough to adapt — reach out on the Contact Me page.

More photos and updates after the Badlands run. If you’re an H3 owner looking for a proper modular cargo platform and drawer system that actually fits this vehicle, keep an eye on this one.
