Little Sahara State Park (also known as the Waynoka Dunes) is one of the Midwest’s best open-sand OHV destinations — more than 1,600 acres of active dunes in northwest Oklahoma, just south of Waynoka on U.S. Highway 281. The dunes formed from old Cimarron River terrace deposits and range from about 25 to 75 feet high. The taller faces, including Competition Hill and Buttercup, sit toward the west and northwest.

This is open dune riding, not a marked jeep trail system. You choose your own lines across the sand. Allowed machines include ATVs, UTVs/side-by-sides, dirt bikes, dune buggies/sand rails, and registered 4x4s (Jeeps, trucks, etc.). It draws everyone from first-timers in the softer bowls to experienced riders on the steeper faces.

Access & fees (verify before you go): Park is open 24/7 year-round. Dune admission is typically $15 per person per day (passengers 10 and under free); an annual pass is offered at the park office. Required gear on the sand:

• Solid orange whip flag (6″×12″, no logos/writing) on a whip ~10 ft from the ground
• Working white front and red rear lights for night riding
• Roll bar and seat belts for dune buggies and 4x4s
• Helmets required under 18; strongly recommended for everyone

Important rules: Pedestrians are not allowed in the dune riding area (use the observation deck to watch). Stay inside park boundaries. Summer sand can be extreme — many riders prefer nights when it’s cooler.

Nearby Waynoka has fuel and groceries. For 4×4 drivers, soft sand rewards tire pressure management and momentum; stock vehicles can play in easier areas, while bigger faces favor more clearance and experience.
