Broken Arrow is Sedona’s classic red-rock jeep trail — short, scenic, and busy. The motorized route runs roughly 3.5–4 miles round-trip through Coconino National Forest (Red Rock Ranger District), with slickrock, ledges, and views that draw both private 4x4s and commercial Jeep tours.

Highlights include Chicken Point, Submarine Rock, and obstacles known as The Steps (or Devil’s Staircase), The Slide, and the Traffic Circle. High-clearance 4WD and low range are the practical minimum; skid plates help on the ledges. Stock capable vehicles can manage with careful line choice; less clearance will bottom out on The Steps.

Access: From the Hwy 89A / 179 junction in Sedona, take 179 south about 1.4 miles to Morgan Road, then east to the end of pavement and the dirt staging area. Parking is limited; don’t air down in the neighborhood, and keep noise down on the way in.

Permits: A Red Rock Pass (or equivalent federal pass) is required for trailhead parking. Check current fees and any seasonal restrictions with the Red Rock Ranger District (928) 203-2900.

Expect heavy traffic on weekends and peak season. Share the corridor with hikers and mountain bikes on adjacent paths. Best light and thinner crowds are early morning or late day; avoid after heavy rain — slickrock gets treacherous.

Broken Arrow is trail #25 in Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails (FunTreks / Charles A. Wells), rated difficult. It’s one of the book’s flagship Sedona trails.
