For longer than I’d like to admit, I’ve been trying to find a solution to the aged plastic trim on my H3 Hummer. The Trim on the vehicle has taken quite the beating from the sun, weather, and years of driving. This damage has left the plastic with this blotchy grey-ish chalk white color. I’ve tried a bunch of products that claim to restore the look, like Mothers Back-to-Black Trim and Plastic Restorer, but they barely last a few days. I can’t bring myself to use Plasti Dip or Bed Liner because it looks half-ass. The heat gun trick didn’t work either. In the end, I always had ugly plastic trim days later. The search continued on until recently, I found out about Solution Finish – Black Plastic & Vinyl Restorer.

Solution Finish is not an ink, dye, or a stain that restores originally black surfaces to a brand new look and feel. The promotional video claims that it also works on vinyl and rubber, but I’ve only applied to my plastic trim so far. In the video, Chris West explains that Solution Finish “dissolves the existing oxidation, puts the coloring back into the part being treated, and then with UV protection prevents (future) oxidation.” The end result looks absolutely great and I don’t have a greasy looking finish.

What do I need for application?

1. Solution Finish – Black Plastic & Vinyl Restorer (A little bit goes a long way)
2. Rubber Gloves
3. Rubbing Alcohol
4. Painters Tape
5. Windex Glass Cleaner – The regular kind
6. Old Dish Sponge
7. Unused Shop Towels (Quantity 3)

My Recommend Application Instructions

1. I recommend cleaning the part surface with Windex Glass Cleaner and an Old Dish Sponge getting the bugs, grim, and etc. removed from the surface.
2. With a clean Shop Towel and Rubbing Alcohol clean the surface again, be very thorough this time and use extra elbow grease.
3. Tape the area off with Painter Tape, I didn’t want Solution Finish getting on the vehicles paint job.
4. Apply a small amount Solution Finish to a clean unused Shop Towel, with plenty of elbow grease, work the product into the part and don’t leave any streaks behind.
5. At this point, I let the Solution Finish dry for a half hour, occasionally coming back with a Shop Towel that I had used with Solution Finish to rub the product in again.
6. Finally with the third unused Shop Towel, came back about an hour later and rewiped everything down again.
